I've recently learned that probably no disrespectable pirate ever said "shiver me timbers". It was the literary invention of Frederick Marryat in his 1835 story Jacob Faithful: "I won't thrash you Tom. Shiver my timbers if I do". It seems Mr. Marryat may have been concerned that a stronger oath might offend his readership. It appeared later in Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island in 1883.
