Rudeness on the boards

Feb 23, 2005 macguy link
I have been watching the boards lately and it seems the fourm mod is getting tired of people being rude to each other on the boards. The purpose of this thread is to say something that needed to be said. I think everybody just needs to chill out. A lot of this rudeness is probaly being caused by the mounting tension awating an update. Please keep in mind as I was reminded Incarnate was out sick for a week, which problay has delayed somethings. Please everybody just chill out, and give FM a break.

Aww Incarnate got sick?

Well, I hope you get better soon, Incarnate! Don't stress yourself over Vendetta unless your absolutley sure your 100% well, otherwise you'll just get sick again ;).

Thanks macguy

It's actually only 2 problematic users and 1-2 others who seem to be easily led. It just seems like a pervasive problem because these individuals post frequently.

Regarding an update: I hope that isn't the problem. I know that users have become _accustomed_ to an update roughly every other Monday night (Tuesday morning technically), but there was no major update promised for this week or last due to the particulary time-consuming tasks of launching the NPC cap ship and the Official Development wiki. So far there is no delay in any scheduled update.

Oh, well I thought it was general rudeness all around. Anyway ya I honestly think the waiting for an update is putting some people on edge, this can be seen especially in the bugs and suggestions boards.

Anywho, an update is bound to come soon. And it'll either be a large update, a series of small updates, or a small update that does something cool.

What precisely is defined as rudeness, exactly? It seems that even minor ribbing is considered rude and grounds for deletion. I didn't realize "Be Nice" meant "No sarcasm, irony or comedic understatement". If I'm wrong, please clarify.

one love!!!

You are wrong, or at least severely overstating. If I can't tell that it's good-natured ribbing, then it's likely that most others can't either. I'm quite able to detect scarcasm (which has it's place, but can also be used to create a hostile environment), and am quite fond of comedic understatement myself. This is a website that is trying to be a safe and open forum for existing users while trying to be attractive to new users. Users have a terrific amount of freedom here, given that it is a commercial website, and the basic request of "Be Nice" isn't too much to ask I think.

The "Be Nice" statement is pretty complete and self-contained - I don't think it's necessary to expand on it:

"Be Nice

The Vendetta message board is intended as a communications medium between the Vendetta userbase and Guild Software, Inc. Users are welcome to discuss general game-related topics, make suggestions, or voice constructive criticism about our products.

This area is meant to be a positive place for constructive discussion of the game. Flames and other rude behaviour will not be tolerated. Offenders may have their accounts deleted. If you have a suggestion about the game, we would love to hear it. If you disagree with someone, please keep it good-natured. Thanks."

hey, sorry if i start babbeling n shit, I drank a litlle too much but im still checkeing the vendetta boards, damn i must be a addict :) anyway, a big problem with forums is that you dont actually percieve what the writer intended a lot of the times. I've learned to look past this, but i can understand that sometimes someone says somethin and means it in a sarcastic way or whatever and another person takes it serious and well... showtime you know, but thats a lil bit the problem with text communication, your missing a lot of intonation and bodylanguage, so in other words, i love you all :p its easy to misunderstand eachother on a forum.

I see and understand what macguy is saying, he has a point. The FM also makes a
few good points. But Starfisher and ArAsH both manage to hit the nail on the head
while striking from two different directions. One complaint that I have is: reading
through a thread and coming across things like "flame deleted" or "inappropriate
post deleted" etc. This is done with the best of intentions I think. But, it also leaves
me with the impression that I have missed something, or at the very least that the
continuity has been disturbed. Yes FM, there are rules and I try to abide by them.
Yes macguy, we all need to "chill out" once in a while, and I think that that bit of
advice might also apply to the FM as well. To me, the most offensive thing I know
of is censorship.

Ratt, my only other choice is to delete the posts entirely. This is the website of a private commercial venture. In exchange for following the few rules, you get to make yourself at home. Guild has the right, and perhaps the responsibility, to regulate what goes on here. If you want flames and rudeness, please go to one of the fine Community Sites linked to the left.

Easy FM... I'm not criticizing, nor am I stating a preference for a particular type of
post. I'm not trying to incite rebellion either. Just expressing an opinion. Sorry if
the wrong impression was given.

"Easy"?

I think you are inferring a tone that is not there, which is ironic given the nature of this thread. As an experiment, try reading my previous post again, but imagine it in a really slow, nice tone. I deliberately chose my words to be polite and neutral, and yet you respond as if I'm yelling.

I saw this on slashdot this morning and I think its a very innovative new way to flame people. And now everyone chill out and lets get on with our lives, shall we?

A common problem with non formal written communications is that the reader must infer the missing parts compared to a normal conversation.

To use a computer-ish analog
The mind has a "fill in the blanks" engine running and it is genetically pre programmed to expect a multitude of sound variance in voices, gestures, facial expressions and a predisposition toward the person that communicates. In addition to genetics, most peoples childhood environment has reinforced these communication protocols, so when most of the communication carriers are gone from the link, the mind must infer a whole lot for the message to make sense.

Luckily we have an intuitive super central processor unit controller called consciousness who can make quality assurance on all incoming and outgoing responses as well as override most of the automatic features. Too bad we forget to use it so often :)

i hate slashdot.
i think that "funny" comment was the rudest thing I've ever read on vendetta board.

Hello again FM.
I took a little time and re-read your post and imagined it in a variety of pacings and
tones of voice. My *perception* of your meaning remains unchanged, and "yelling"
never had anything to do with it. Unfortunately, within this context, resonable discourse seems difficult at best, and I choose to forego further discussion of how
to interpret the "meaning" or "intent" of posts to this forum.

To return briefly to my original post: One man's flame is another man's Valentine.
With the *possible* exception of unsavory comments regarding someone's race,
creed, color, gender or national origin, the value and relevance of posts should be
left to the community to judge.

In closing, I respectfully refer you to my last post (Wed 11:23PM), specifically the
last sentence...

"the value and relevance of posts should be
left to the community to judge."

What can I tell you? The game developers have laid out a few simple guidelines for the manner in which people conduct themselves here, and have requested that I moderate the forums in such a way that the guidelines are adhered to. The "Be Nice" page has little to say about value and relevance - nor do I except to move or delete things that are clearly off the topic of whatever thread or forum they were posted to.
Feb 26, 2005 RattMann link
Hmmm...
"The 'Be Nice" page has little to say about value or relevance..." Isn't that rather sad?
