New wave tactics

From here on out, everyone begin to only fight if you're out at 3000m, so that you can jump before you die. Also, you can sit this far back and fire missiles so that you can have a deterrent that you can fire and run away with. If a pirate gets too close, you should continuously back roll so that the oncoming attacker cannot get too close and you can draw off getting hit. Lastly, laugh at the futile attempt of the pirate, because you know they can't do anything about your running away from even the slightest of conflict.
Pirates can catch up, if the person strait boosts mostly. Those who have skill at running away and dodging, congrats, you have just become invincible.
We that oppose this pansy like running find it irritating, as even ctc people have followed this way of prancing off.
In Escape Velocity, the biggest problem with running is that you have to come to a full stop to jump away. Also, you could only thrust forward in the game, so one must turn, slow down, face back towards the jump direction, and activate. It is clear, however, that this will be a short end to anyone who wants to run.
Locked battles for life are soon to be extinct.

It's time for multiple choice!

When faced with pilots who use "bad form" tactics, you should:

a) Lash out at them in a harsh, flamey tone about what a noob loser they are.

b) Say nothing, but write an inflammatory post on the boards.

c) Approach them in a calm spirit of friendly competition and offer to teach them better ways of fighting.

wylfing, I believe the point he was tryin to make is that these tactics are promoted by the game. There aren't "better" tactics for staying alive.
Jan 22, 2005 Borb II link
Or d) Just get good so they can't beat you with bad tatics...

:p
Jan 22, 2005 Fnugget link
They aren't fighting. They are surviving.
If they back roll, you can't disengage and call them a wussy, they will still run away.
If they go out to 3000m and shoot missiles, what can you do but get close enough to them to completely smash them, only to find a warp ion trail.

I have done choice a, choice b, c is not applicable, and d is just not plausible.

Of course they can't beat you with bad tactics, but you can't ever kill them either. Don't fix what works, and they do survive with a chance of killing unskilled or unfortunate pilots. However, all they can do to an experienced pilot is annoy them. They draw your attention away from the CTC transport, as missiles always do, and although you might not die, you can't get anything done. It's almost like children. You can't hurt them, they don't understand having to do things themselves, they eat up your time, etc. etc. etc. We're just bad parents, and I'm here to find a solution that I can't find myself. (No, I am not lashing out at my own children, as I don't have any, nor anyone elses. I do understand there are good kids too, and they turn out to alright)

It's clear enough that 2 backrollers working together is a full-fledged exploit. (And that's why something must ultimately be done to 'fix' it.) But if it's just one pilot, there's a fighting chance s/he doesn't know how unsporting it is, or doesn't know any other way to fly. They need to be gently instructed, not flamed.

I agree, too, that even in CtC it's an unsporting tactic. But there the pilots probably know better and are being unsporting on purpose, so maybe some name-calling is justified :)
Jan 22, 2005 Shapenaji link
I often DO instruct them. And yeah, the 2 backrollers working together is nuts. (Although, the Orion Cent makes pretty short work of most backrollers)

I think a fix to that exploit would also fix the problem of people getting into disengaging-type fights in the first place. A solution should solve both these problems.

If its dishonorable, but it "works", then there will always be someone doing it.

if you fix the backrollers,

Then I want a fix for the rocketspammers and the rocketrammers. Not to mention the autoaimrammers.

cheers

Joy...

Another self-serving "all tactics that I do not use and personally approve of are bad" post.
Jan 22, 2005 Fnugget link
I'm sure you can tell when someone is going to rocket spam/ram, or auto aim run. I bet you can find a way to counter once you notice.

But Shape understands. They won't go for a real fight because they are getting small tastes of success with the disengaging fire. I say, those that do this, should try dueling each other. It is because their goal is not to destroy the other person, but trying to flee, that they will not be able to duel.

I have seen people go from honorable fighters to survivalists. Think of this like fencing. It should be a sport where you have to go back and forth at it, but here one could endlessly step back, waiting for the lunge and striking just afterwards. Maybe duels should count for something. Give you honor points. If one person keeps backing off, just back off too. Eventually the two duelists will have to go up and attack each other, instead of back rolling or whatever. Plus, no running when your ammo is out.

> If one person keeps backing off, just back off too.
Heh... I once fought a n00b in his Hornet who did nothing but backroll. I backrolled back for a while, after we got to 2.5km he finally realized. That strategy tends to work well.
I've been known to backstrafe, myself, when trying to disengage after a group battle that went particularly badly...

You have to backpedal to survive the new proms. Backrolling will probably get you killed because you dont go backwards fast enough and they'll get you with their AGT flares..

In a fight I use what works. It's a fight not a fun little game of tag or some thing like that, any thing goes.

How ever I do get anoyed by the people that run from 1v1 fights....

Ahhh, you just GOTTA love it! More people whining about not being able to force
someone to do something they don't want to do. I don't understand PvP freaks.
Who gave you the right to force PvP on someone who doesn't want it? You want to
do anything you want in-game, but are unwilling to conceed the same right to others. Get over yourselves and your complete lack of consideration for others.
With the amount of crying I hear on this subject there MUST be enough PvPers out
there so that you can all go and fight among yourselves...
Jan 22, 2005 Shapenaji link
Well, Ratt, this generally applies to those who get INTO fights and then backroll, Ie. Mosquitoes.

And those who don't want to PvP don't need to go into grey space. That IS, in fact, the whole point of grey space.
Jan 22, 2005 Borb II link
Shape is right, don't go into grey space if you not looking for a fight. And DON'T get mad and complain if you get shot up in grey space.

I've had people get mad at me cuz I shot them thinking they were playing CtC, and I've had people get mad at me for helping out a friend who was in a fight he did not want to be in. Any thing goes in grey space, if you can't handle this fact then don't go into grey space.

Gray space, Red space, Yellow space, Blue space, Purple space. Who freaking cares?
You are all WHINING about not being able to kill people who prefer not to play YOUR
way. You DO NOT have the right to force your ideas of what this game is all about
upon other players!! I have no desire to structure this game around players who
choose to victimize others whose idea of play is to abuse others. Why should any
feature of the game favour pirates, ambushers, wormhole campers, PK freaks or any
other anti-social ass-holes? There is a lot of room in this universe for a whole bunch of people, and a whole lot of ideas. There is plenty of room for you to do your own thing amongst your own kind without harassing other people.

"There is a lot of room in this universe for a whole bunch of people, and a whole lot of ideas. There is plenty of room for you to do your own thing amongst your own kind without harassing other people."

That's exactly what the previous posts are saying. "We are using Gray systems as our play space so be aware that PvP occurs with any player who enters in this area" These players have found a niche in the universe to play in and are publicly declaring it so other players are forewarned.

That leaves 1/2 of the universe open to players who want different game play. There's pleanty of room for you to play in without getting hassrassed by others.

Um, Rattman re-read some of the posts before trying to look smart and posting. What we are talking about are the people that come into grey space (and yes Rattman grey space is different then yellow space, blue space, and purple space.) and then expected us to be nice when we fight them (if we fight them, I'm passive most of the time) or to only fight them their way. Then if we don't they run off get on 100 and tell every one how mean we are. Or they'll get a few friends and some missiles and come back to kill us, which I don't care that much about all fair in love missiles and war. But I don't like it that much when I evade all their missiles and start to kill them that they run off to go re-load. That's my peeve. Regardless Rattman get some blood on you hands and walk a bit in our shoes before you tell us what to do. It's a whole new world our side of happy nOOb land.
