I got five:

Escape reality.

Adrenaline rush.

Relieve stress.

Improve reflexes.

Yeah, basically what Arolte said. Also, with multiplayer games (e.g. Vendetta and Starcraft), there's the element of gaming with friends. It's like getting together with friends, but not quite...

challange. I like the challange of climing the skill ladder.

Video games are played for the same reason any game is played. Just like Basketball, or chess. It's a fun diversion.

Problem is, Urza, there isn't much of a challenge with Vendetta's rank system. It's more like who has the most time on their hands to bot or kill newbies. That's far from being an accurate representation of skill.

Agreed, if I stayed on one character name, I'd probably be in the top 50, however n00bs attack me and then whine when I kill them. "Your score says you're new"

who cares about rank? I'm like #200, but i get respect cause people know how good i am

Aye. People like games because of the escape from reality, for some it's trying to get to a simpler world without all the hassles of going to school and what-not, for others it's the unrealistic situations you get. Of-course the best games, and gamers, are those that are interested in a challenge, games with at least one real goal.
In vendetta, for example, there is no goal at this point, so what we get is a bunch of FPS people that can't think of any reason to play vendetta but to kill people. Once you get goals, and rewards for those goals the FPS people will just sorta drop off the map.

Aye, FPS people going bye bye will be great.

ERrm... I'm an FPS person. There's nothing wrong with enjoying the combat portion of Vendetta. Just because something is an FPS doesn't mean there's only mindless shooting. When the odds are against you or you simply want to survive, you'll eventually have to use your brains one form or another. It's not all just twitch factor.

Players in Vendetta will almost always need to manage their own money via trading at one point, or do something else besides kill when there aren't that many players around. Point is, don't hold any misconceptions against FPS addicts. Even the devs stated that they want to keep a solid portion of the game for combat purposes, due to previous influences (Tie Fighter I believe was one example).

Heh, if we had chases like the ones in the canyons of the death star in Vendetta, it'd be friggin' awesome...

That's why I was in favor of making the weapon battery separate from the engine.

/me mis-typed
that shoulda been "The evil, evil "I love mindless shooting" FPS people"
I like combat too. But only when I win. :P
