i'm Posting this to provide the devs with a data source now i might complain a lot here but you should take this with the note: i'm still playing the game so its not like i hate it.
Community:
This is 1 of the great things about VO the community is AWESOME, i mean seriously you can basically ask any question in 100 and get pointed in the right direction, a specially people like EMS but even most of the rats are relatively helpful. ( i played HON so i have low standards ;) )
Graphics:
and here comes the pain: the graphics are just completely and totally shit i mean it looks like the game stepped right out of 1990 i have seen counter-strike 1.3 setups that look better then VO, seriously it looks like absolute shit, get some modelers to rework the ships and rocks, make more detailed textures.
its not the 90's anymore most people have more then a Meg of ram in there video cards.
Gameplay:
Flight controllers:
This is hard for me to review as I'm originally a FPS player and hints the flight controls in F/A mode where well logical to me point and press W, thats like walking only you do it in 3d now, so this seemed like a no issue to me the tutorials are really tl;dr ( and i serieusly didn't read the tutorials ) hate to say it put if i want to read a book i will read a book the wiki is helpfull in this respect i can always look stuff up on the wiki, some help feature like a in game wiki would be more helpful then the tl;dr tutorials.
Difficulty curve:
This is a hard 1 to judge, but from my view your doing a shitty job, first of all the differences between bots vs players is like night and day fighting bots is Way to easy compared to players.
i mean bots its basicly press r and d and fire until they die, for players you won't be able to pull that off ;).
plus the curve is mess up special when early game your given your pilots license it was for me et least a horribly difficult mission ( that took me 1 try but it feels really hard at the time ), after hitting license 3 it becomes dull to kill bots but your not at the point where you have a change against players yet.
this is a Really low point in game play and i say the hard bite are licenses 3 till 5. ( i don't know if you keep records but i suspect this is where a lot of noobs give up ).
After that you get Pvp combat ( i'm finally at this stage ), and you slowly get your players kills in, this is where the game picks up again and you need to learn new skills, while your basicly in the same places in grey all the time now its oke cause you have stuff todo, when there are people around etleast.
Now this is a very combat style curve i will grand the devs that and not everyone is a combat pilot.
Combat itself:
Now first of all getting used to flying white out F/A is REALLY HARD, and its really hard to get a good hang and feeling of control in combat now for your people say you noob learn to fly, this is not something i say because i hate it this is a learning issue, its almost impossible if not impossible to learn how to do combat right without some help from the community this is a big problem as so gamers don't want to ask or have grown up in other games where asking well turns into a bitch fest.
So yeah when you get the hang of bot fighting you need to learn a different style for player fighting you need to have control over why your heading in combat and you need to think in 3d plus know the right ships, to select of have a fight in, there is a lot of knowledge that come in here that a new player won't have so yeah this would be a typical 100 question if noobs get that far and you see it from time to time what is the best ship type questions, i mean how should a noob know not to pvp in a moth.
Trading:
this is way to easy now i know what trades will say no its not, but a lot of the time i can prefectly make money in A nation-space and B the hole where to sell my stuff in this sector means i can effectively find 1 jump trade routes, not a lot of money in them sure but normal worth the effort plus kinda save, its almost impossible to make a loss by any other means then by getting own by a rat.
its relatively easy to collect money in the game and that rapes the economy i mean money is not respective of work at all.
Mining:
Sorry for all the ORE people that like the current mining system: but its fucking dull nobody is gonna fly around wait for the rock to hit 30 and go to the next for a long time, do something creative with the mining make it harder or et-least make players more active in mining, add some feature to make it harder to get rare ore from rocks ( like manually aiming the mining beam ) or some other interactive way to keep the player awake while mining tbh the biggest danger i see in mining right now is that i fall a sleep and get shot for overheating a rock.
Pirating:
As my current guild disallows this no review on the pirating.
Content in the game:
To litle ship models there are like 8/10 basic ship designs and the rest is all stats there are 7 useful ships:
Moth ( mining and trading )
Vult ( combat )
Valk ( combat )
Prom (combat)
Ragnarok (combat / Mining )
Atlas (trading / mining )
EC-89 ( observing during nationwar )
This is Very little content thats being used, specially when you consider all those ship models have like 3 till 5 versions.
Making some more ships models while a bitch to Balance, it would at something different to see from time to time for players, i mean i feel like i almost seen all the content in the game and i have no been playing that long.
you take subscription money i would not consider it unreasonable that if i keep paying you keep adding new stuff for me to play with to the game.
While player owned cap-ships are fun for vets its not something that will draw in new players i think you should make more low to mid level content a specially ( i mean starting the game with 1 ship choice Seriously :\ ), there should et-least be 4 ships for every license level, the lack of content makes the game feel really dated and badly maintained ( now don't get me wrong this is not what i think is happing but its what it looks like from a newb's few point ).
i think fixing a lot of these issues would prevent noobs from being scared away more then the 1 or 2 bad comments in the game.
Hope this is of some use to the Dev's / General community.

Welcome to VO, pilot.
Get trained up in some PVP skills, and enjoy!
Oh, and your long post (which should be in Suggestions) will get flamed. ignore the trolls.

welcome aboad, have FUN in a space combat game where you can trade, mine, run and lots of other things, including avoid combat...
some help feature like a in game wiki would be more helpful then the tl;dr tutorials.
I have already suggested this many times. This is an online game, no need to pack all content in client, just add a HTML browser tab, bound to a single server, this one hosting a vo-wiki mirror, history, tutorials, BBS, and whatever can be done with simple HTTP.
About ships/models, really we need more diversity. At least most of ships being different per nation, like 3 visually different "bus" models with same stats, one for each nation. Already requested, very unlikely to happen soon... Visuals remains outdated, and best solution would be an optional visual addons pack, like mediaFPS for FS2-scp.
-You also can redefine keys. I did that during my trial, swapping WS//RF, became more logical for me, from a RTS/FlightSim backgroud.

Yeah i use different binds ( but that was later in the game ) and i was writing the control piece a with a special eye on my first undock. ( i rebind ws in place of RF yeah i use mouse 4/5 and do forward and backward ).
its not about the option in that case its about, first undock I'm not gonna change the key-binds until i have played around for a hour or so.
I change this for a other reason personally as it allows me to access all 6 directions more easily ( useful in combat to make jump to my target and stuff )
I tried to write it as much as a newb because I'm trying to give some insight in to the game from a new player standpoint, as the players bases seems to be lacking and this is mostly because newbie don't stick around.

about the 3D flight model and your difficulties with it: First, get a 2nd joystick or a gamepad (G13 is what I use as the 2nd "joystick") to be able to control all 6 axes. The G13 is nearly perfect for this, since it has 15 buttons on it (any pad with such a design would work), I use the small stick on the G13 for accelerating/deaccelerating and rudder control.
second: during fights, try to focus on one enemy and do everything you can to keep him in front of you, your brain should do the navigation/focusing by itself after some fights. Now you can try such things as rambo-turboing in on an enemy, fly above/behind him, turn your ship by 180 degrees over top (X-axis) (you now fly backwards), adjust your course and repeat.
About all the other things: I agree. And hey, another HoN player :).

Think mining is boring? A lot of the good rocks are in hive-infested sectors. It's a lot more fun trying to mine hugging an asteroid while fending off assault bots as your ship gets heavier and heavier. Try it some time.
Until you can actually dig through the asteroids, I won't consider it to be "mining".
As for usefulness of ships, the ones you listed are useful, but all types of ships in the game have a purpose and do get used. The centurion (especially the two-port models and the superlight version) is a great pvp ship - very nimble. Marauders are good light trade ships, and the Corvus varient is an excellent pirate ship. I like to use the hornet sometimes when I'm pirating NPC ships, and it's also a good ship for use with rail-guns (you can one-hit-kill many light ships if you hit 'em with four advanced rails at once). Warthogs can be used somewhat effectively in combat, but they're great for botting, and the mkII version and the Corvus version (greyhound) are both great for travel and piracy. The raptor can be a good choice for botting in an ion storm (where you get extra XP), especially if you're in a system like Nyrius where there is a local TPG station, but not nearby Ineubis or Xang Xi stations to sell you a storm radar extender. The centaur is a good trade ship, and a pretty good heavy combat ship - it has two large ports and a small port, lots of armor, and is relatively nimble for that kind of firepower. And the Revenant is an excellent ship for newbies - lots of armor and cargo space, lots of firepower, and available very early in the game (do the courier mission immediately after the flight test, and you're good to go). It's also fun to use in PVP.
I'm not saying we don't need more, but there are a lot of other things I'd rather see happen. Also, the money we pay to the devs does get used to add to the game, even if not in the form of new ship models (which are a lot more work to create than it would seem). This time last year we did not have player capships, and the game was not available on Android. There were also a number of annoying bugs that have been fixed, and minor improvements to random things. There weren't as many real game updates this year as there would normally be, due to the focus on android support which took a lot of work, but things have started picking up a little the last few months.
Also, you're wrong about capships. One of the main questions newbies used to ask and be annoyed about the answer was, "Can we fly capships?" For a lot of people, the idea that they couldn't get capships was a turnoff - why bother playing at all if they can't eventually get a big awesome ship? And it also tended to make them think this game was lame and too unfinished.
You're spot on about the level 3-5 doldrums though, and about the difficulty gap between PvE and PvP. It helps if you can find fellow newbies to fight.

I am sorry, your post was even longer than the tutorials, and I did not read it. Sorry.
Also, your writing style is shit. I mean, seriously, who the fuck puts an apostrophe in "devs"? How hard can it be? Just hire some editors to read your post or something. It looks like you're a middleschooler from the 1990's.
PS: Since you come from an FPS background, you may want to see if your videocard driver comes with some software that allows you to adjust your viewing experience. Try turning down the saturation to a minimum, and then taping a piece of brown cellophane over your screen. I think you will find that, from your finely honed perspective, the graphics will look greatly improved.

Thanks for the feedback, which I have not completely read at this time, but will do so when I can (and, for reference, threads like this are usually better suited to Suggestions).
On the point of graphics, does your configuration look similar to our official game trailer?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fdulyrAkvX4
..If it doesn't look like that, then you may be using an integrated video card with drivers we have flagged as "buggy", where the game is falling back to lower settings to keep things from crashing horribly. Making a PC game requires working around a lot of buggy drivers (Intel GPUs in particular are infamous).
I certainly don't think our graphics are the best, there are a lot of things I'd like to improve (some areas are worse than others). But, like many other MMOs (WoW included) we also aim for a "middle ground" that will allow lower-end hardware to keep playing. We're never trying to hit the high-end, and we continually update assets as we go along (nebulae were just improved a few months ago), but we're always trying to hit the moving target of looking "decent" while being playable for as many people as possible.

While this may not be to your liking, many of us build plugins to improve the Role Playing content of VO. (e.g. check out the Casino in Odia M14 one of these days)
Just an idea and some Lua code can help to make this a better game too!

Welcome to VO.
Thanks for the new user feedback. People will argue many of your points, but most are in-line with many new-user opinions we've seen for years. That a new player took the time to give such detailed feedback is a GOOD thing, typos and grammar aside, and is testament to your first point: the vo community is one of it's greatest assets. People CARE about this game.
I won't address every point you made, but:
PvP: I started PvP 4 hours into my trial, so I don't see why newbs need avoid it. IMHO this is THE best aspect of vo's gameplay, balancing real and game physics in excellent proportion. I always recommend trial newbs try some arranged fights with other newbs before their time expires. Moving into grey space, however, takes a thick skin to die as many times as it takes to get any good against pilots who have 3, 4, 5+ years of being "at one" with the flight model. Find a sensei who will scale down to ships and weapons you can use, so you can learn what technique can do over equipment advantages. You will still die a LOT. Learn from every death, and come back for more! Eventually you will start booming vets.
Mining: of course it seems boring to combat pilots, but it is a deeper system than most ever explore, and provides plenty of activity when you have played all the content in the game 10 times over and need a break from all the pvp whining and boasting.
Player Capital Ships: Vets may be the only ones flying them yet, but even a 0-level newb can hire on as crew. Free repairs & reloads, 1,000,000 armor around you, and a stateroom with a view (& a turret gun!). Player cappies are still in their infancy in VO, so stay tuned.

First of Diamond kinda nailed my feedback its not meant as a dig at the favorite game of everyone its my effort to try and improve set game.
i work in IT hints i know the value of user feedback, and i consider writing out my problems for the devs things older players might not have noticed to be a good thing. ( ever been at some workplace where a IT system had a huge bug and nobody seemed to care ? ) there is a 90% it was never reported and nobody at development noticed.
I'm putting things in hard terms sure, i did consider that some people might not like this but considered it more important for the community to get a small window in to the mind of a new player, as it very worth the amount of negative feedback i might get for providing set window.
on the graphics have to double check tomorrow but it seems not far of i know about the mesa issues and i will compare with a intel mesa only card ( as to see if its the same issue ) if I'm not sure otherwise i might get a other video card i a machine and compare with that.
also i do not consider wow to be a good graphics benchmark personally as its graphically bad but even if i compare it to something simple like ORC must die, it seems to me that your dropping the ball here and you are scaring off new players.
i know about software bugs and it might be a configuration issue, so for the rest of the post i'm gonna assume that its my buggy setup and not the game.
( if it is my configuration and not the game i will leave a not to ignore that point tomorrow )
@Conflict Diamond PVP: I did already play a lot ( well relatively ) of pvp and i don't expect to kill a 6 year vet on my first run ( if i did the game would be broke ), but the problem here is more the easiness of bot kills then the hardness of pvp, it would be great if (some) bots are well less easy to kill, or etleast scale up better, so that you are more ready for pvp ( and yes i get that this would be a lot of work ), there is just a huge gap between PvE and PvP that needs to be closed, by getting better bots and getting more weak players ( sure both play a part here ).
the vets i had combat with are generally nice about fighting new players ( again the community is NOT a issue in VO at all and its 1 of the things that made the game ).
Player Capital Ships is more of a example of where new content is put so far back at the game that people how get them well are basicly the vets, sure its fun to know its a goal to be made, but it seems to me that there is a lot of easyer ground work in terms of adding ships that could be done in that time, i would love to see more choice in ships, its not that i'm like it should not happen its more the priority i question here.
@Keller: sure its a option would be great to have some plugin repo in-game for 3rd pary addons to make it easyer for the new players now i don't have a problem putting some lua in .vendetta/plugins but a lot of new players do / will.
@genka: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ad_hominem
@incarnate: short version i will get back to you on the graphics point.

also i do not consider wow to be a good graphics benchmark personally as its graphically bad but even if i compare it to something simple like ORC must die, it seems to me that your dropping the ball here and you are scaring off new players.
i know about software bugs and it might be a configuration issue, so for the rest of the post i'm gonna assume that its my buggy setup and not the game.

@incarnate: short version i will get back to you on the graphics point.
I dunno, I smell a vet in disguise. The OP made references that indicate more familiarity with our community than a n00b would have. Add to that the rather casual insulting tone of the feedback, and you have a profile of somebody who is pretty comfortable on the forums already.
Perhaps he's just comfortable on forums in general?
after hitting license 3 it becomes dull to kill bots but your not at the point where you have a change against players yet.
this is a Really low point in game play and i say the hard bite are licenses 3 till 5
Some of us are working to allay this.
There's also this cool thing called a web browser and a site at www.vo-wiki.com, tethered to the ability to play VO in windowed mode. Pay attention to Rin (Pizzasgood), he's got some wisdom when it comes to ship loadouts and combat. The Revenant really is a good combat ship, and it's available at Trade license 1.
As far as graphics go, no complaints from this user. Okay, so they aren't up to seventh-generation console standards; it's a PC game, and like Incarnate said, they have to cater to the middle of the road. The graphics are colorful, and somewhat stylized. It's a moving target. Graphics are not what keep me coming back to a game for over 8 years, it's the gameplay. As long as it looks decent, and the door stays open for a pair of head-stabilized, motion-sensing pair of VR goggles, this user is contented, which leads me to the next point...
you take subscription money i would not consider it unreasonable that if i keep paying you keep adding new stuff for me to play with to the game.
They aren't "taking" your money, you are paying for a service. Vote with your wallet, but keep in mind that doesn't entitle you to dictate the direction of the game. Suggest things, but have some perspective. I tend to take the viewpoint that the "behind the scenes" work is some of the most important development work that happens. Consider how many indie MMOs are out there, then stack that up against the fact VO has managed to become the one known for "ushering in" a wave of Android based gaming, has appeared in commercials on prime time, in gymnasium plasma display screens. That seems like a much better product of development time than building a few shiny new ship models (or my pair of head-stabilized, motion-sensing VR goggles).
Mining is dull, but once you learn how it fits in to the rest of the game universe as CD said, it becomes a means to an end. Some players even seem to view it as an end unto itself. Personally I'm glad they implemented it simply and elegantly rather than trying to turn it into some kind of mini-game.
PvP is the apex of the game for this player, and I think it's been a more enjoyable experience so far than in any other electronic game, ever. When we duel we're not just dueling; I'm Scorpion and you're Sub-Zero, I'm Achilles and you're Hector. A furball is like the art of grasping chaos. All the different player philosophies and attitudes are thrown into sharp relief.
I'm also curious to know if you've tried the missions Corvus System Reconnaissance, or the X-1 flight test, heck, even Research Vessel Defense. They provided me with an adequate level of challenge even after years of PvP experience. Of course it's not the same as fighting a player, but it's still a good way to hone those skills. I guarantee you will not be able to pass these missions by holding down R and A (or Q and D, or whatever else you have spin/strafe bound to).
Thanks for the interesting review, looking forward to crossing flight vectors soon.

I will take the time to agree that the AI of the bots does need to be worked on a bit. The bots in Grey should be a lot tougher then they are. While the bots are ok for a while they do get relatively easy once you get the hang of it.
For instance the Gaurdians in Bractus only attack 1 at a time usually and never step it up even after you destroy several of them. Like the strike force they should in fact start to gang up after a few are destroyed. Coordinated attacks I suspect are something we will never see.
Unfortunately a smarter bot requires a lot of cpu time.

Not even World of Warcraft has this. It's not the developers' responsibility to make plugins easily accessible to players.

That may be true, but it is something I've thought about. It would be kinda cool especially for mobile devices, where installation is even more involved. However:
- We don't have a lot of free time and it's not a priority, obviously.
- I am a bit reluctant to give the impression of official support to any software that is not really official (and could, in theory, even have some sort of security problem). Which means we would need some kind of pretty serious team of people checking over code changes and submissions and things. About this time I begin to get a headache and instead go find something more productive to think about.

@draugath i do not consider Wow the gold standard here ( if things can be done better then why not ? ).
@incarnate i get the official support issues there ( i guess i should write a plugin manager plugin or something ).
@Whistler i own deathzor.com its my primary nickname thats the best i can provide you with as proof, i guess it will have to do.
Yes and i know a empty word-press blog on a domain is not exactly that much in terms of proof ;)
But some of the complains are/where from earlier notes, currently playing on a 3 months old account most of the complains/problems/or potential improvements where from Month 1 but i wanted to give the game a far shot to see if i could find the "reason" behind these problems, hints i waited with a long string of user feedback until i had a light understanding of the game, in place of putting it in blank feedback.
