'Nother newb here

Just another newb wanting to ask a bunch of questions.
How do you steer in this game? I can't get my ship to move but forward and backward.
What is up with all these people with names like "Orun Collector 1235465" I mean, can't people come up with original names? Or is this a RP thing?
Actually my only serious question is a rhetorical one. Why do newbs who say they come from another game expect to have everyone answer every question they ask no matter how small without witty/smart-a$$ed comments? I mean, if you have played in another game before, ANY mmo (I have been in 5 in the last year and countless before that) then you have seen that there are trolls on the forums (only one on here Dr. Lecter and he seems to actually be a little funny at least with his trolling) and in the chat.
Anyway, it is good to be here, thanks to everyone who has helped me get started and I can't wait to get into PvP.

One note, for what it's worth, is that due to our presence on the Mac, we seem to get a fair number of people who have never played an MMO or any online game before. In fact, a few years ago we were getting quite a few people who had never played a game before (not an easy thing to design around, while also making the early game non-irritating for regular gamers). So, unlike most MMOs, which are windows-only and have a big rotating base of veteran gamers (and often MMO vets specifically), we may occasionally get a more diverse spread of newbies.

I know it works that way sometimes. And I have even suggested to one in chat during my first eight hours of play to calm down and ignore the comments and focus on the answers.
I also know that trolls and newbs who wont read (or those like me who read too fast and skip over the answer they were searching for in their haste) are going to ask questions that have been asked a zillion times before.
I guess my attempt at humor came off wrong here. Mostly I was just going to say hey and thanks for the great game, then this post came out.
So, Hey from a newb, thanks for the great game. It amazes me that there is only four of you doing this. Keep up the good work.

The humor was clear enough (if one reads down). Welcome.

I feel like this has to be a vet posing as a noob (no, it's not me), because it's just way too Goddamn sensible to have come from any of our more recent additions.

Orun collectors are a type of NPC bot. You learn more about the history of the Hive (Orun collectors belong to the Hive) in Training mission 5. The oruns in the training sector are training versions with weapons that do no damage.

Dr. Lecter:
I am a newb here. I just subscribed a week ago. My characters are Boden somethingorother (Serco) and my main is Ebon Askivi (UIT). I am a vet of MANY other MMOs however.
Tarenty: Read the whole post, the question was sarcasm ;-)

Welcome to VO Etrogann! I hope you do not mind, but I've just taken 'Nother Newb as my latest super secret undercover alt! So don't tell anyone, just between you and me though, I suck at hiding alts so I don't give him long :)

Will be nice to see another sarcastic bastard in the 'verse, you British by any chance? :)

Incarnate, we need more newbs like this, not only can he read and write, but he doesn't seem to be a total moron, yet.

I'm hi-jacking this thread.

I'm new to the game as well, I'm testing it out because my gaming PC fried and now all I have is my macbook to game with. I took a look at my options, and it was try VO out, or go back to Eve or WoW. So, here I am.

My newb questions are; how long is the fighter training grind in order to get into decent equipment for PvP? 4 weeks? 4 months? I see this game has been around for awhile, I'm already worried I'll never really catch up. Does that stigma exist in VO?

3 weeks tops to get good levels, unless you hate botting. Little more for the faction standings, if you want fancy faction-specific ships. If you ask me, they ain't worth the effort, but hey, what do I know.

You could probably get enough licences for a Vulture MkIII and Neutron Blasters in three or four days of dedicated VO time (a few hours a day). These items are recommended for starting PvP, as they're low license and cheap.
Oct 04, 2010 Whistler link
You'll catch up with the levels and gear easily enough. You'll be behind in skill, although once in awhile a "natural" shows up and shows us a thing or two.
Oct 05, 2010 look... no hands link
aye, "naturals" are few and far between.
Oct 05, 2010 yodaofborg link
Yeah, seriously, if you try hard enough, in this game you can take out high level players at 2/2/1/2/0. Cent mk2 with a Neutron blaster can be deadly in the right hands. This game really is not about how good your levels are, but of course they help, by giving you access to even better stuff that causes more hurt. In the right hands, even a newb free ship (can't call it a bus anymore :( ) can cause hurt.
