Eve Exile, New Player

After 4 years of playing Eve I recently quit out of complete boredom, I was a PVP player with about 1k solo kills out of the 2.6k I managed over that time... and thats enough of Eve, this is the wrong place to moan about it and your probably sick of hearing about it!

Onto Vendetta which I am feeling my way around. I've just finished my 1st mission and will be having a go at the rest in due course, the game feels much like the Frontier Elite 2 which I used to play on the Atari ST alooooooong time ago and Elite on the Spectrum alooong time before that :0) It's a refreshing change compared with CCP's game, and I feel more involved with what is going on around me. There is more skill involved of course, I knew that instantly when i first fired my basic weapon and had instant Elite flashbacks!

I have a few questions, yes I could RTFM (and will aswell as the Wiki) but I have a few which may not be covered...
1) Killboards, despite my combat experience in the other game I thought killmails were a stupid idea - is there an equivalent here? (Hope not)
2) I prefer a roaming nomadic kind of play, flying by myself and doing what I want whenever I want... what are my chances in Vendetta?
3) This is one for the dev's, is the 8 hour trial enough? After playing Eve for 4 solid years I'm finding it hard to get into any game at the moment, perhaps increase it by a small amount or have a 1 hour countdown once you hit a certain level or money?

Mad props on the Linux client btw, it's nice to have a native build that works without having to mess with Wine!

/me out

Welcome, exile.

I had the Atari ST and Sinclaire/ZXSpectrum versions as well.

1) We don't have killmail. We do have duel stats which are recorded if there is a consensual duel.

2)There are a lot of empty systems out there, and not a lot of players on at any one time. You could easily mine, kill hive bots or trade to your nomadic heart's content. If you go for the more prized ores, hive strongholds, or most lucrative trade routes you will probably have company. You would be missing out on player vs. player combat if you hide out too much, which would be a mistake.

I was a PVP player

It's always so cute to see EVE players talk about PVP. You'll find that absolutely none of those "PVP" skills transfer to a game where you are the one doing the fighting.

No, don't get me wrong I'll be engaging in PVP I was more asking, if the game is playable as a solo player rather than joining a corp/guild?

Cute in what way? I really don't see the point of that comment unless it's a deliberate troll. It's blatantly obvious more skill is involved in twitch play, re-read my comment on paragraph 2 "There is more skill involved of course, I knew that instantly when i first fired my basic weapon and had instant Elite flashbacks!" :shrugs:

Welcome to VO. Yep, you can play this game solo, but it is sometimes nice to be involved in group activities (which can require joining a guild, but not always).

Bingo!

I played solo for nearly a year, and enjoyed it just fine. The main reason I joined a guild is because I almost always play games solo, so I felt like trying something different.

Nomad-wise, you can roam pretty well in this game. Different stations sell different gear, so your position will impact what you fly, but that's part of the fun of drifting around. Later you'll be able to afford to take a cargo ship and haul your favorite gear to any stations you need it at, so you can lessen that problem. You can't do that with ships though, just with gear. You could still manually fly a bunch of ships to a station if you really wanted them somewhere they aren't available, it just takes a while.

i have been here for eons (2003) and just joined a guild in July

Sure guilds werent invented til some time in 2005 but people used to fake it with their names by going [blah] ThierName before real guilds existed

1) Each player has a sensor log that includes who killed them/who they killed, but theres no thing everyone can acccess that says kill info.
2) Solo is pretty easy, just expect certain tasks to take longer.
There aren't that many killing-squads that go around targeting single people, if that's what you were wondering.
3) Not a dev, but I think they had it increased a couple of months (a year?) ago, and then decided to change it back. I decided to just buy one month when my trial ran out, and then go from there.
The PVP down the line is awesome, the tricky part is getting there.

Addendum to Spedy's point #1: The data in the sensor log only lasts until you logout or do a ReloadInterface(). Your character page does track your total number of kills ever (broken down by nationality of the person killed) and number of times you've died (total, unlike kills). But the only permanent logs of which specific people you've killed or been killed by are the duel logs generated when you execute a formal duel with the /duel command.

Welcome to VO :).

We're actually in the midst of reworking a lot of the early game, partially in advance of our mobile client release on Android. We may extend the trial at some point after that, we'll see. Historically, I've tried to keep enough extended-trial promos going with MMORPG.com, and other sites, that new users had options; but there aren't any going on right now.

Anyway, thanks for the heads-up, we're aware and working to improve things. Hope you enjoy the game.

> This is one for the dev's, is the 8 hour trial enough?

I'm not a dev. I'm actually just checking back in after getting an email recently.

No, 8 hour trial was not enough. It was short enough that I could not afford to spend any time socializing. It was short enough that I only saw a brief introduction to various areas of the game, with none of them "deep enough" to get me hooked. This is a time/age when other games are either infinite free trial, or free play / pay as you go.

> We may extend the trial at some point after that, we'll see.

My suggestion: Unpaid players cannot go above license level 2, but can play as much as they like at that point. Don't really know how workable that is (or if level 2 is the right cutoff), but license level 1 is very easy to get, and that at least gives beginners a goal to work for, as well as opportunity to get into the social arena.

Or, you could all just ask us paying players for a friend key ;)

Level 2 would be too low. It would need to be at least level 3 so that you can gain access to the wider game - most of the "real" missions don't open up until then, and by level 3 you have access to a nice variety of gear, but low-end enough that you wouldn't really want to become a perpetual trial user. And before level 3 I don't think there's much multiplayer activity going on.

But anyway, they're planning to do a lot of reworking of the early game in the fairly near future, (probably before winter is over from what I understand), so not much sense worrying about the current system.

This game is almost a copy of a old game I used to play called Space Above and Beyond. It was a MMORPG that was produced by EA. But ended about a year after being released from beta trials. Only thing missing is that when you docked you could walk around to the vendor NPC's and buy and trade.
Nov 15, 2010 yodaofborg link
You might be surprised to find out that VO has been in development (in one shape or another) for around 10 years, and probably in the idea stage well before that, so yeah, it's not a copy. Did you mean Earth and Beyond btw? Because Space Above and Beyond was one of them cheesy Fox series that never made it past season 1.
Nov 15, 2010 Rzer link
Yeah, that's what I meant. lol I really missed that game glad to have found one like it. The targeting system is pretty realistic as it shoots like a real fighter would.

Heh, Space: Above and Beyond. Those were the days. Back when I did Lightwave plugins, some of my plugins were used in that show. Along with Babylon 5, Buffy, and a couple of other shows and movies.
