Welcome to VO, tonelab! There's a lot of different paths you can take in this game, so it really depends on what role you'd like to pursue.
Welcome to the game Lambroek.
As Strat said, there are many different paths you can take, I suggest you try out different things in game and see what you like doing best, then choose what you'd like to spend most of your time on.
Not to suggest you can only do one thing in VO, as you know there is a huge variety of things to do, and always improving to be done!

The best path for fun and excitement in VO is to become a mean, dirty rotten killer pirate. You get paid to kill people all the time and the food is great.
Wait, there's food?! Sweet! I thought we were just in it fer the grog!!
and the food is great.
And the rum, and the women, and a collection of other things I'm not supposed to mention in civilized space.
Yarr.

Lots of tips...
1. find a mentor to help you out.
2. Trade till you can get a Moth then run bulk procs... (under the trade missions) to build standing.
3. Avoid the nastier bots for a bit, at least till you get comfortable with combat.
4. Make at least one trip to Sedina while yer a newb, just for fun, then avoid it till you get comfortable with combat.
5. Mining is dull, but easy money if you need it.
6. EXPLORE.
Then theres guilds, really there are only a few worth joining once you figure out what you want to do...
VPR, if yer anti-pirate.
[EDIT] CHRN or CLM if you're inclined to say "YARRR" and making money easily and quickly.
TGFT if trade and making a ton of money is more your speed.
THC if you are a homicidal maniac.
BLF if you're into role play.
ONE and ITAN are the nationalist guilds if you decide UIT isn't for you.
[EDIT] ORE if you are into mining.
So those are the most active guilds that also have a purpose, well defined mission and actually function as guilds.
Read the back story, it's long but entertaining and it'll give you an idea of what VO is about... (though it was written by the Itani and is biased, though not very.)
Check out the VO/VPR wiki pages, tons of info there to.

Trade till you can get a Moth
Yeah, in Grey Space, at Corvus: -/-/-/5/2 vs. -/-/-/8/4 is what you might call a big Goddamn deal.
Also, I note that "making a ton of money" is not really exclusive to [TGFT]. Many pirates are in the billions of credits. We're not Ecka-rich, of course; but then again, our lives aren't Ecka-pathetic, either.

Tequila.
He -- like you -- missed that convoy :P
Heh. Why do Vipers have lots of plugins, Lecter? I only have one; TargetLS. I must be missing something...
Talk to Shlim :D
I would comment, but I really can't be bothered to respond to such obvious hot air. Try harder next time, Lecter.
I'd suggest that it is you who needs to try harder, Shlim, but after your epic string of deaths at my hands the other day, I think it clear that your motivation is not lacking.
Rather, you should try smarter.

"I think it clear that your motivation is not lacking."
I take that to mean that you have a deep respect for me as a Viper pilot, Lecter, and secretly wish me to be your mentor, but are too abashed to make the request. Don't worry, Lecter-you too can be redeemed from your evil ways!

'Nuff said, kiddo. You're an embarassment to your guild, both as a combat pilot, and as a person.

I have two thousand and nine deaths logged in performance of my duties, Lecter. The ten which you contributed are no more meaningful to me than any of the other ones. Going on about yours is only making you look a bit behind the times.
Actually, I'm proud of my deaths. While... certain people... like you, for example.... were off killing newbs, I was trying to kill people far better at PVP than I am to make the spaceways a safer place. So you can take your petty trolling and stick it up your thrusters, because it won't stop me from doing my job.

That's a pretty high horse yer on there, sweetie, considering what actually happened. I was quietly hunting hive queens, kiddo, not killing newbs. Then you showed up and mangaged to get yerself pwned eleven times in a row while spouting off about me on 100. Maybe if you'd have scored even one kill, it wouldn't have been a total failure.
The whole thing was exquisitely pathetic, as well as perfectly representative of how you play, and no amount of hot air on your part will change that.
