me elgish correct

Darth: yeah, but the game server is on majikthise.guildsoftware.com and sadly won't be affected by the change of their webserver from(probably) T-whatever to OC-whatever

Fiber? How much money does Guild reallly have?
/me thought the webserver was colocated...and that the devs had something like ADSL (or maybe ADSL + cable) at the office.

Heh, you all are seeing way more than there is.
it's not a matter of desire to change, our old isp is going away and we don't have a choice.
We don't have much money and this is cutting deep into our pockets.
This is for our office which has the web server. The game server is co-located so that won't be affected.

How much does a typical fibre connect cost, and at what speed?
Jul 17, 2003 StarFreeze link
Fiber = expensive...really expensive...well depends on the town and rates. But a lot of times it can be a few hundred easily a month. But since its been a few years since I've ever looked at pricing it maybe higher or lower...

This isn't like.. AT&T dropping off an OC48 DDM. This is us running a piece of multimode fiber from our first floor office, to the fourth floor, where a longtime friend of mine from the ISP world is going to give us some bandwidth very cheaply. So the "fiber" is all of like 300 feet. It's just more convenient (and reliable) to run multimode fiber than it is to use cat5.

The game server has lots of bandwidth. More than we have at the office. But the server itself is.. well, a P3 550, and it's been overloaded by the new AI stuff. We're shooting to make 3.3 a bit better optimized, server-side.

Sheesh, if it'd help any i could donate components for a nicer server.....

CATV you heathen.
Jul 18, 2003 roguelazer link
Better than the old celeron, right?
Jul 18, 2003 StarFreeze link
It's good to keep the code optimized so that a crappy server like a P3 550 can run it good. Thus in the future they won't need to keep upgrading the server because of newer code. Keep it optimized like they have done very well so far can make the game run a lot smoother..and when they do want to upgrade it the new server will have a small load thus no issues with the server.

I mean think about it...you code everything to work well on a P3 550... then when the time is right you go out and buy a Dual/Quad Xeon Server with 16-32GB of memory.

:)

Um, apparently it took Wolfram all of 15 minutes to recompile Mathematica for the 64-bit G5, and I have a sneaking suspicion that it's a tad more complex than Vendetta...
Jul 19, 2003 roguelazer link
Then spend 3 months rewriting everything to take advantage of 64 bits!

"AT&T dropping off an OC48 DDM."
*drool* Mmmm... 2.whatever gigabit fiber connection... Aren't those tens of thousands of dollars per month?
Jul 20, 2003 roguelazer link
ctish, i'm not talking about recompiling, but more like redesigning the game so that all 64 bits are used to the complete max of their space. Or something.
Jul 20, 2003 Cmdr. Freeman link
BTW, Xeons are not 64-bit CPUs. You have to do gawdawful hacks to use >4 GB RAM on them.
Xeons sux0r...go Opteron!!! =P

You're using MS Visual Studio? Thats what we used at camp. I like how it automatically does indents for you, but since it's something like 200 bucks (you wouldn't happen to know if there's a student discount, would you?), I'll have to use gcc... As for the pointers, couldn't you just tack on some extra zeros or something?
Jul 20, 2003 Cmdr. Freeman link
The server would benefit from AltiVec?
Or just the client?
