They all look like vaguely modified copies of the Enterprise.

Definitely star trek influenced. And someone said he works for another company now and has for over a decade.

Echo the Trek comments. This kid's a good artist, but let's not make this game look like Star Trek. Luis is doing awesome work.

Indeed, the whole saucer-and-nacelle thing is so trekish =/

he can draw.

due to his concept art looking like ST, being influenced by other genres means that he has taken an existing idea and made his own spin off of it.

that doesnt mean that this kid cant draw other things...

so, if this guy saw this game, and offered to draw some new skins for the non-updated ships in the game, we should turn him down because his other concept art was too star-trek-ish??

While I believe the comments about Star Trek-ish designs are true, perhaps people should look at the Trident Light Frigate. Looks like a Star Trek ship to me.

That being said, I personally prefer Luis' style of design over this person's, and given Guild's financial situation, they can't exactly afford to add another person to their crew.

No doctor dork, it is because if "we" were to hire this "kid," "we" would essentially bear the responsibility for his family's ruin, if VO was ever to fall through and die a horrible death. It would be downright negligent of "us" to promise this "kid" and his wife and children money.

Besides, when was the last time you saw a good dreamworks movie?
IT JUST DOESN'T HAPPEN.

PS: This whole thread is fucking embarassing. Lockit, flushit, killit to death.
I really hope this fairly respectable artist-person doesn't check his server logs often enough to witness this ridiculous and disgusting trainwreck and decide that the whole of VO is like this.

no, just you, genka

genka: yeah, as opposed to those nice people at electronic arts, blizzard, and every other game company. those guys take care of you for life! like, i heard that at electronic arts, they have never layed off anyone!

as for this 'kid'. uhm. he drew modified versions of the enterprise. paramount should sue. second of all, pen + ink is a long @#$ way from 3d + textures. any of you people who took 2 or 3 remedial drawing classes in college could produce drawings of similar quality, though i hope to holy god that you people have more imagination than this kid, who is apparently still developing his imagination. or at least, i would hope that you steal ideas from a wider variety of sources.

Yeah! Exactly! "We" should strive with all our being to become just like EA!
Maybe then Waylon will come back and work for "us" again!

genka, the only thing you've said of value in this thread is that it should be locked. It is irrelevant.

The only thing that really matters is this: We've got a good artist, producing awesome stuff, that doesn't make you automatically say "Star Trek" at a glance. We don't need/Guild can't afford (I don't think) a new artist. Yeah, that guy can draw, no, working for Guild won't ruin him if Guild collapses.

genka i was being sarcastic. EA fires people all the time for no reason, and whoever is left they work them 80 hours a week. EA closed down the entire studio that made the Command and Conquer series, their whole setup was in Las Vegas with dozens (hundreds) of people. EA didnt think twice about gutting it, divide bribe and conquer, moving the survivors to california, and leaving a twisted wreck of shitty product behind.

and theyve done it dozens of times, and many other game conglomerates have too. where this this mythical stability in the game industry you speak of? hell, in any industry?

Well, has anyone seen BattleStar Gallactica? The Hog _is_ a Viper, it's not even disguised as anything else ;)
If you think it looks really different, go back and see the original BSG stuff. They're flying Hogs, ffs!

As for hireing every other guy that can draw, I think it's a bad idea. I'd rather have them actually put some more of Luis' stuff into the game. Let's hope they get enough time to do that in the really REALLY close future.

er... look up in this domain. this aint no kid. he works for a well known 3d animation studio. his name is in the credits for shrek.

We don't need ogres in this game.

I like this guy, especially his "Thing in a Jar." What an excellent idea for an art project. I'm gonna go make one now. Heh heh...

And - didn't Incarnate say that the obstacle isn't finding people who can make conceptual sketches of spaceships, it's training them to work efficiently within the artwork and rendering structure used by Guild Software.
Oct 03, 2006 drdoak007 link
wow, this went far.....

as for the KID reference, i'm one, i'm also 30. all the devs are kids, they're lives revolve around videogames.

yes, his credits are available to see on his website that i linked to... and if you notice, there is a WHOLE section on 3D art on there too.

his humour is great, leber is right. and his desk is cleaner than mine.

and what is up with dissing Guild Software all the time??? i highly doubt that they are short of funding. it doesnt look good for them if people keep saying that they are poverty-cases. so stop saying things like that.

No one's saying this guy sucks or that Guild doesn't have any money, just that Guild doesn't need a new artist at this point since Luis is doing great stuff and there are more important things they could be doing, since art is being taken care of.

I've looked at all the stuff on that site, not, and it's pretty cool. Here's something that would be great for captains of capital ships to use to give orders.
