SCAR is currently looking for a new TS server. I'll try connecting to it now. Maybe we can talk?
EDIT It works like a charm, but there's no one on. Can we speak ingame? I'd like to set up a partition for SCAR if at all possible.

yay
i'm going to try and try it today
I'll get on so A-Dawg has someone to talk to.
Hmmm
No-Ones On!
No-Ones On!
I set up a TS server for our guild about 4 months ago. At first there was a lot of interest and most members at least tried it out. Sadly the usage has gradually dwindled and at this point I'm considering turning it off, even though it's not very expensive. It's just not being used much.
The only conclusion I can come to is that VO just isn't a game that is enhanced by Voice Ops. When it was used in group events the IRC type chat still had to be used because not everyone had TS capability. So it seemed to me to be kind of a burden and redundant. Some event sponsers tell me that have used it to help organize and run their events however I notice lately that even they haven't logged on in a while. When doing solo play things like trading or mining it was pretty intrusive to have somebody cough, snort or giggle in your ear. (And you know who you are. ;-)
I still think there is a lot of potential for TS in VO, but it has remained just that, potential. Good luck with your server I hope it becomes a popular and fun addition to VO play.

I think there was a suggestion a while back to make VO support voice chat all around like counter strike. I can't remember why it was turned down but I do remember it being a pretty good reason. But, I still think it would be cool.
I'll bet it was turned down because it would require lots of coding, lots of bandwidth, and lots of server resources for guild. That's just a guess, though.
I think that was the one.
I do think operations that could be coordinated in TS would be more efficiently carried out (given a team of the same basic capabilities) than one coordinated by group chat.
However, I perceive the reasons for the recurring failures of the servers (there've been more, alienb once set one up) to be the following:
- not everyone has TS, and maybe not everyone wants to use it. Mac users just recently gained admission to the holy streams of TeamSpeak, and it's my suspicion that not everyone knows about it.
- there aren't actually that many available activities that would benefit from voice chat (I guess you can count them on one hand: Border Skirmish, Nation War, <please complete the list>)

Yeah, it would be much more useful when large scale battles are more common. Teamspeak is invaluable for group combat. Issuing orders by typing seriously takes away from your combat ability. As has been mentioned though, the problem is that its so difficult to get everyone from the group on TS. And if everyone isn't on, then it's useless cause you have to type it out for the others anyways.
Yeah, I think the problem with this game is NOT that TS isn't useful,
it's that so much of the population has a mac, and isn't used to being able to use TS.

ooh, I have TS so I'll have a look if that SCAR channel is going up...?
LeMort:
"The only conclusion I can come to is that VO just isn't a game that is enhanced by Voice Ops."
Wrong, Dead Wrong...
"When it was used in group events the IRC type chat still had to be used because not everyone had TS capability."
THAT is the problem that leads to the decline of TS useage; when not everyone in a group can use it, then they're forced to use the in-game chat to communicate with the group anyway, and it becomes a burden to use TWO means of communication with the same group, so naturally, the one that doesn't work for the WHOLE group gets dropped.
When that happens a lot, and people regularily can't use TS to communicate with their flight groups in-game, then they eventually stop using it.
If every VO member had access to a TS client (it's not cross-platform to the same systems as VO) and a working Microphone/speakers (that's just laziness, people... Mics are not that expensive...) then the benefits would vastly outweigh any drawbacks, and nearly everyone would use it.
In a game such as VO, voice chat is far superior to typing, since you need to relinquish control of your ship during combat in order to type tactical info for the group. TS eliminates the need for that, so combat groups with TS work far more quickly and efficiently. I can speak from experience, since at one point, most of SCAR had TS.
So here's my suggestion...
give VO voice functionality, but leave voice server operation up to the guilds and individuals using it; allow the player to specify the server they wish to connect to, and guild doesn't need to maintain them. IF, one day, Guild can afford to run their own TS Servers, that would always be an option.
In the meantime, if you CAN download and run TS2, do so, and get yourself a mic - TS is very good to have in-game.
Soulless: Whenever A-Dawg or I log on, we should have it running... last I saw, something was broken and the channel was stuck open and nobody could talk in it. We'll get something going again soon.

Alright, I'm registered with sleon's server, which is working well. Thank you sleon for setting up an offical SCAR channel.
VO using TS I find from experience is way more enhanced, much like Cunjo and Ghost's posts (heh, Cunjo and Ghost sound extremely similar IMO). Even when you are not working as a group, and half way around the universe from each other you still don't have to take time out to type, and its a lot easier speaking to people verbally than through words (personally). While it is socially uncomfortable at first, you all get used to each other after awhile as with everything and I usually end up having a fun time no matter who is on.

So I guess thing thing to do would be to start a "Everyone on VO get teamspeak" movement and hopefully we could set up some cool stuff. If everyone plays along, eventually it will be the people who don't have TS who are missing out, and will then be inspired to get it... hopefully.
PLEASE use the Speex codec for EVERY channel!

Right On.
Slime is right - not everyone has compatibility with the other codecs, and while it's a pain to select the non-defaulted speex codec when starting a channel, please do. 7Kbps works nicely.

Its as simple as this though really, not everyone wants to use teamspeak, for more than system/mic/ignorance issues...
...I wonder how long someone like Mehairy, or Mini Mih would last in a voice enviroment, plus, i cant always understand none uk peeps very well (heh, infact, even some english accents are scary) - plus, last time I used team speak with a VO crew, I got giggled at for my broad yorkshireman livin in manchester accent, hehehe, I guess they were expectin some squeeeky lil kid or summink, heh
