Proposal: Spacecraft Design Contest MK II DISCUSSION

Idea: How about we keep this thread to the discussion of the ships, while the contest thread itself remains devoted entirely to the links/pics themselves.

meh, it's not really a contest as far as contests go. I think it would be easiest to just link to stuff on the wiki, and keep that updated.

What if I offer up a 10 million credit reward for the best new design? Then it would be a contest!
Mar 08, 2006 Dark Knight link
We'd need a panel of judges, preferably ones that aren't making models themselves.
Mar 08, 2006 tumblemonster link
Maybe we could get the devs and guides to be the panel. They vote for the best design.

I can give you my opinion if needed.

There's only one issue with the guides being judges—and it's not that I have an issue with any of them being judges for the "contest"—at least one of them does modeling. What if they want to submit entries? Perhaps just a bunch of people who aren't submitting anything?
Mar 08, 2006 zamzx zik link
Fine, I'll be a judge then, since I have I dont have any programs, and stuff, I'll judge (but, I doubt anyone wants me to ( I haven't even been online in almost a month O.O, I got neverwinter nights...)
Mar 08, 2006 tumblemonster link
Why do we need judges? Why not just have an entry deadline and let the players vote?
Mar 08, 2006 LeberMac link
Sure, then everyone re-submits their designs in the approved thread? That'll work.

lol ^^ Must get ready for the bombardment from all these designers :)

Suggestion

Requirement: The ship be layed out as the devs have it in the design wiki.

You need to show the orginal sketch, the model, and the different maps leading up to a completely textured and game ready model.
Mar 08, 2006 tumblemonster link
I would say that any design can be submitted, from a sketch to a fully detailed 3d model. That way everyone can enter, even if they don't have 3d skills. We vote on the best design. I think this would make a great contest, I'll sponsor the prize money, we just need to decide on final rules.

Suggested Rules

Prize Money: 10 million credits to the winning entry

1. Design can be done graphically in whatever manner you choose, from a sketch to a complete game-sized model to a high poly detail render. There are no provisions for judging the designs. Keep in mind, however, that people will probably tend to like completed, textured models over sketches and non textured models.

2. Must be a new design. It can not have been previously posted in the contest thread or the Wiki.

3. Designs must be entered in the Spacecraft Design Contest MK II thread, and hosted reliably. (perhaps we could make a special Wiki page for them too?)

4. Entry Deadline?

Tumblemonster: have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place winners

1st: 5 million
2nd: 3 million
3rd: 2 million

Proposed Rule * limit to three entries per person, you can only win one place, IE if you have won all the places, the one crowned
1st will remain and your other designs would be invalid seeing as youve already won something.

I would say a deadline of April 8th at midnight GMT

We should come up with a kinda format for what your turning in.

IE sketchs should appear in whatever way, the info needs to be put in a certain order, the models should be shown at an angled view to give us a sense of depth to judge on etc.

Sketch layout

Woo! 10 minutes, a pen and a sharpie? Eh wish I would have had my prisma colors on me at the time, this ship thingy would have highlights at least ^^
Mar 08, 2006 tumblemonster link
I would like to keep a large prize for the winner. How about:

1st: 10 Million credits
2nd: 5 Million credits
3rd: 2 Million credits

I don't mind contributing another 5 million. If anyone else would like to chip in, feel free. Blak might want to sponsor as well. I'll ask.

Maybe the devs could put together a set of trophy widgets for the winners as well, similar to the ones they made for my last Roid War. I'll ask that too.

Limit: Good Idea, I agree. No more than 3 entries per person, and no person can win more than one place.

Format: Good idea. Each design should be a png or jpg with a date and designers name on the image. Perhaps we require a 3 orthographic view + a 3d rendering of 3d ships, and at least 3 sketchs of the same ship for non modeled entries.

Deadline: How about two months? If I enter I want to have time to texture and detail my model. Let's give people enough time to do things the way they want.

Any other ideas anyone? I think this will be pretty fun!

I suggest we have a centralized place for the images to be uploaded, the biggest problem with the very first contest was that people deleted images from their website or other problems occurred and the images were lost.
Mar 08, 2006 tumblemonster link
Good call. How about a special Wiki Page for the contest?
Mar 10, 2006 tumblemonster link
OK, I'll post a new thread with the official rules. BLAK has agreed to sponsor, and I will host all the contest images if we cannot get them on the wiki.

Damn you all. Hopefully this takes a month and a half to get off the ground.

haha, Gavan.
