I know that vo was originally open source, or at least it was going to be, but my question is: was the source ever released? If so where might I find it? Does any1 know?
Sep 24, 2005 nyrbnyrb link
I doubt they'll released it for another 3 or so years at least

It was originally open source? No it wasn't... so far as I know, they developed the engine with the intent to sell it to a game company, then that "Test" evolved into the game you see today. I can remember them explicitly stating that they wouldn't go open source with it.

no, VO was not developed as open source.

When guildsoftware looked as tho it might be unable to sell the engine but before they decided to go ahead and fully develop it, a lot of the players on the message board ASKED them to relsease it as open source if they had to shut down.

Since they chose to develop it, that never happened, and most likely will never happen.

VO doesn't decompile nicely...
Sep 24, 2005 CrippledPidgeon link
and besides, that, wouldn't it be copyright infringement to decompile VO without Guild's permission?

read the EULA, then you know...

Are you perhaps thinking of the ill fated Parsec project ??

You may not reverse engineer, disassemble or decompile the Software except to the extent that this restriction is expressly prohibited by applicable law.

the above is an excerpt from section 7 of the EULA.

if it were open sourced people would cheat even more than they do already.

additionally, someone would just set up a free server and vendetta would die a quick death.

they could sell source licenses with an NDA or non-compete or something attached to it. might get 2 or 3 crazies on here to buy that for a couple hundred bucks but is it worth the risk that the code will be leaked? or that they will have to sue someone?

Ananzi: *if it were open sourced people would cheat even more than they do already.*

???

Do you mean exploits, like BP, Crackbotting, etc or actual cheating Ananzi? If so, then how?

Yeah, we know what the definition of cheating is, I think what martin is asking is, do you mean general bind/sploit usage, or actual *modding* and cheating? Becuase if its the latter, would you ming posting an example of someone *cheating* ?
Sep 25, 2005 ananzi link
if nobody had ever cheated in this game, then Guild would not have spent dozens of hours writing client-verification checksum code, encrypting their packets, server validity checks, and so on and so forth. i havent seen anyone cheat but where there is smoke theres fire. on top of that, its an online FPS game. cheating is natural.

despite slashdroids slobbering that 'security through obscurity doesnt work' and therefore all code should be open source, 'security through obscurity' in fact saves game programmers hundreds of hours of work, because in the end, security is a never ending battle. it is not some mathematical axiom that you can implement if you just think hard enough.

Sure, in testing phase there were cheats, and although guild have done an outstanding job of making sure stuff like that cannot go on, nothings ever 100% right? But are you actually saying there still are cheats? Or is it just because you get pwned consistently by certain players? I mean, again, you didnt actually answer my question, give an example of somebody cheating now (not before, or in other FPS games, in Vendetta and now.)

[edit]

Me gives a fake example.

This uber leet haxxor guy flew into the sector, and he was moving faster than his ship could possibly go (speed cheat).

Anything like that to add ananzi? or are you just saying there are cheats, because there always are in other FPS games ?(which this isnt btw)
Sep 25, 2005 ananzi link
if there are cheats, i dont know about them. guild will probably not publicize them for PR reasons, the same way banks will not tell everyone when they get embezzeld, robbed, hacked, etc.

if there aren't cheats, there will be.

This is not an FPS but it shares so many characteristics with FPS that many of the same cheat tactics (auto aiming, lagging on purpose) will apply here. Its also RP so those tactics (robot farming) also apply.

this thread is about open source. i am just saying why the game wont be open sourced, and if it were, what i think would happen.

The only two cheats that could be considered as such that I saw in my somewhat limited Vendetta time were the aimbot by HSR, which was adressed, and another one I'm not sure about (and thus won't describe in detail).

Thanks anazi, i just wanted to know if you thought there were *cheats* in VO :)

I do agree that if vendetta was an open source project, and more *like minded* people could see how it ticked, there would be cheats. I wouldnt say more cheats though, cos there isnt any (that I am aware of).
