I'm once again at a job where I have loads of free time (about 6 hours in an 8 hour day). I need suggestinons to kill some time, well alot of time :).

I can't play games, but i can surf the internet freely. Also the java irc client on slashnet.org won't work here, the port is blocked and there isn't away to change it.

So suggestions for things to do?

you could try various flash games there are some good ones out there are some good fps flash games, you could bring a book(or if your not allawed books you could bing in a ebook), how about learning a new langauge online?.

the net has loads of wonderus things to do try googling (use the google search engine and try with only two words to narrow a search to one result).

edit; hmm odd.. the r in bring comes up on my edit page but not in my normal message viewing window...

Read webcomics. Here's the ones I read regularly, and recommend: http://slashdot.org/~Beolach/journal/79646

I'm reading some of the web comics.

NO GAMES, even flash ones, my computer is too out in the open for that.

And I can't read either. But i'm going to email myself the Harry Potter ebok tommorrow and read that.

Thanks ALL

Reading web comics from the beginning is pretty interesting, you can see the artist's style change and develop.

I do computer support as a consultant. Sometimes i'm hired just cause they need a body, not because its busy. I acually worked like 3 hours today, the rest of the time i spent online surfing :)

It getts real boring trying to look busy, when i'm cleary not and they know it :)

i'd just take a book. I've been employed in those kinds of jobs and usually by day 3 i'm just reading. I worked a temp job at a help desk overnights one summer and when they complained about me reading I pointed to the "to-do" list they gave me, showed them the completed tickets. then I pointed out that since all they wanted was a warm body to answer the help phone on the rare occasions that it rang (it was a 24/7 help desk, but the people who would need to call it only worked banking hours.. figure that out. Corporate america is just stupid), they could pay me to read in between or find someone else to sit around from midnight to 9am.

@who? me?:
I've got it even worse than JestatisBess. I work 12 hours night shifts, very much of which is dead time.

@JestatisBess:
If you can read ebooks, but not regular books, check out http://www.gutenberg.org/

If you like Lewis Carroll (and who doesn't?):

Also you could volunteer your time to help create the ebooks for Project Gutenberg here: http://www.pgdp.net/

Beolach: If you can listen to music try some podcasts. These are some of my favorites:

http://www.twit.tv = this week in tech with Leo Laporte, Patrick norton and the whole "the screensavers" gang from tech tv.

http://www.vobes.com = Pod cast about everything and nothing. Its very hard to describe. The 1st time you listen it might be odd, but after a couple of shows u will be hooked.

http://www.2600.com/offthewall/ and http://www.2600.com/offthehook/ = Two shows about technology with a hacker slant.

http://www.diggnation.com/ = Weekly podcast about tech new and stuff. from the creators of digg.com

Those are just some of the ones I like and they are all in Itunes 4.9, so they are easy to get.

Any one else have some favorite podcasts. I might not be able to listen at work but i sure can listen at home and on the train :)

If you go there, you'll never be able to not go there. Unless you end up like Kyzentun and read every entry.

I second the idea of bringing a book to work, maybe even study something. Reading well-printed material is better for your eyes than looking at that monitor all day. You could also practice for example juggling, 30min a day to avoid arm and back problems from sitting still.
