It's been a while since I've done this log/diary kinda thing, but I figure now's as good a time as any to pick it up again.

Oneesan is off exploring some caves on Divinia, and as has been the case for almost eight or nine months now, I'm at home with Hitomi all day, save for the occasional trip into town for food or exercise. Friends from flight school have dropped by to visit every now and then; Hitomi seems to be their usual excuse for visiting, which makes it a good thing she's almost always in an agreeable mood. I can't stand to think of how it would be if she weren't.

Naoko has been at home with me as well, helping me with everything I need to do, including guild paperwork (ugh) and finances (double-ugh). Last week she came across some files, and showed them to me (she won't say anything about how she managed to get them, but I had noticed her disappearing for a day or two every now and then for a few weeks before she showed me the files). What was in them was surprising.

Naoko thinks that Yukinari is the person who wrote the files' contents*. After a bit of careful examination, I'm inclined to believe her. Of course, the last time I saw him, he was dead. Apparently something changed, or I saw wrong.

I'd be lying if I said I'd ever stopped wondering what happened to him, or how things could have been different, or if I said that I'd stopped missing him even for a moment. If he's out there, what would I say to him if I bumped into him somewhere? What would I do?

I really don't know the answer to either of those questions.

I wonder if I'll have an answer in time.

* in case we're wrong about who wrote those files, and for his or her own safety given some of the contents of those files, I will refrain from using the callsign the person is currently flying under.

I wish there were more people around here. This house gets really lonely when it's just me and Hitomi. Naoko's off helping with stuff on Arna, and Oneesan is still in Divinia. Nobody else has visited lately, either.

I recently verified the identity of the pilot mentioned in my previous entry as Yukinari. I heard the pilot in question speaking over general comms a few nights ago, and I'd recognize his voice anywhere. There's no doubt in my mind that he is Yukinari now. Naoko sent me some more info about him recently. Apparently he had a few outstanding "traffic violations" (her words, not mine) and was spending a little time in Verasi stuck in a station, which is why she hadn't had anything for me until last week. The station in particular seems to be ironic; it is Thesaadri's home station. I doubt it's anything more than a coincidence that he spent some time in Azel, but who knows?

I hate paperwork. Never can get away from it these days. I wish someone else would do it instead, but no, nobody who could do it wants to or is around to do it. Don't let anyone tell you that running a guild is easy. The amount of effort involved almost always outweighs the rewards of the position. I'm too tired to do much, so I spend most of my free time escorting convoys, or hunting Hive drones. Finally got my Leviathan Hunter qualification, too. The committee in charge of defining the requirements for the various Hive-related awards and medals took a while to decide what they wanted the requirements for the Leviathan Hunter series to be, and they gave out the awards just a day or so ago. Apparently I met the second-level requirements.

I don't think I've ever really talked about why hunting Hive drones interests me so much. Basically, it's a thing of revenge. Seems silly, no? It's been ingrained into my psyche since before I had even finished my first term of flight school. What caused it was my mother's death. She worked for a small mining outfit that worked in the belts in the Eo and Cantus systems, and one day she was mining in one of the outer belts of Eo when a small contingent of Hive drones found her ship. Before she could react and get her ship to safety, the drones had called in the local Hive Queen, and my mother's ship was ripped to shreds within minutes. There was nothing she could do.

Flight school was in full swing at the time, and having lost my father just half a year earlier, I became depressed, and nearly flunked out of school. I only managed to pass that term thanks to Yukinari (whom I had just recently started dating at the time of my mother's death) and Morwen's (my roommate) help. When I eventually graduated and got my pilot's license, I made it my mission to destroy Hive drones whenever possible. Currently, I have well over seven thousand confirmed Hive kills total, including over two hundred Hive Queens and eleven Leviathans. I fully intend to keep those numbers on the rise for a long time, and I think I'll only take a break when I've met the highest-level requirements for the various Hive-hunting medals.

Only a short break, though. Can't be getting lazy, now can I?

... just kidding.

It's been a busy couple of weeks. Last week the Deneb Run had enough racers that we required two groups to hold all the pilots; thankfully Eonis was there to help with MC Spammer, a pet project of his that helps automate some of the more tedious portions of the MC job. This week I'm not expecting such a large turnout, but if there's anything I've learned from the Deneb Run it's that the number of pilots who show up to race is seemingly random; predicting the turnout is difficult if not completely impossible.

Several days ago I met the requirements for the first-level Master Hive Hunter qualification. Because the requirement is pretty much just based on a total number of hive drones killed, I hunted a variety of drones until I only needed one more to meet the requirement. That last hive drone was an Orun collector with the serial number TZ-8233m. I had one of the retired EC-88 hulls in the system at the time, so I figured it might be appropriate to make that final kill with a stock setup for the craft (government-issued powercell and plasma cannon). It wasn't the first EC-88 I'd ever owned (that one has been lost to the void of space for a long while), but it was still an EC-88, one of only two or three that I currently own. I hear that TPG intends to provide the surplus stock of EC-88s (as they're currently selling the EC-89 in its place) to people who meet certain requirements, but those requirements have not been made available yet, so the public can do nothing more than guess at what those requirements might be.

Yesterday, I finally managed to achieve a Pillar of Society standing with the Itani government. Given the difficulty I had getting there (believe me, the system being used by the nations and corps for the reputation and standing of pilots does anything but make sense), I suspect that the number of other pilots with similar standings is rather low. Honestly, I'm not sure the effort I expended on getting the rating was worth it; the only thing different from the rating just below it is a differently-colored bar in the visual representation of the rating (yellow as opposed to a bright lime green).

It's been a long time since I actually climbed into the cockpit of a ship and flew by hand; while I enjoy the relative safety of using the RPS (Remote Piloting System) device that I designed over a year ago, I do miss actually being able to feel the ship responding to the commands I gave it. At least I have my favorite Centurion parked a little way away from the house; tinkering with it has become a sort of stress-reliever lately. Maybe I should put it in storage and find another ship of mine to tinker with. There's not much left to do short of taking it apart and putting it back together piece by piece at this point. Oh well.

The Deneb Run starts in about an hour. I should go get stuff set up and make sure everything's ready. Eonis was tinkering with MC Spammer today, so I should probably also go make sure that's in working order...
