Homing on Cappies

May 03, 2011 PaKettle link
As a long range suggestion,
I am sure some players would like to be able to Home on board thier cappie. Respawn would be in the cappie hanger in the exact same ship at normal cost (or slightly higher). If the cappie is destroyed at the time of the players death then they would respawn at thier regular home base.

I realise the rats will use this to pirate deep in nation space but it would also make a defensive fighter screen practical as well.....

+1... if respawn is limited to a specific number of fighters the cappie in question is able to carry.

-1 as proposed

+1 to Ryan's suggestion to only being able to buy certain ships in the cappie

or allow the player to select a ship that is currently in the cappie's cargo bay (so not to be an unlimited supply of elite ships basically in whatever system you want). This would also make HACs superior to Tridents for this purpose, presuming they are able to hold more ships than a trident.

And the current system to set your home would have to be reworked to support this. Remembering the last two locations where the player set their home station would work. If the most recent location is no longer dockable (or destroyed) then they go to the second most recent location. This would also be applicable to conquerable stations for when you are homed at a conq. station and someone else steals it.

[Edit]
On second read, I'm not sure if Ryan is proposing to limit the selection of ships available for purchase or the quantity that are purchasable, but yeah, -1 to unlimited ships.

+1 with limited quantity and type of ships available for purchase.

Actually, lets take this slightly further. The capital ship probably shouldn't come stock with a fighter or support squadron on board. While flying the cap ship, allow us, to "dock" with a station and buy what ship and weapon loadouts we want to be able to make available for purchase when people are docked on the ship.

+1 draugath, except perhaps also allow other sufficiently large ships to buy them and ferry them into the cappie, so that it can be reloaded by supporting ships without leaving the battle.

It could also be limited to only the ships a player has pre-loaded on to the cappie. Once those are gone then the player would be bumped off to the normal home station.

-100 - Death is already too cheap in VO...

and no idea why the game engine and NPCs seems to ignore ressurection technology... But this would unbalance everything, reducing even more the respawning time. And there are obvious exploits for that, like a rat/enemy homes in a cappie, leaves, then the cappie enter 'enemy territory' or nation space, then rat respawns behind borders... unacceptable.

RP-wise, lets say that Ressurection Hubs require a static station to work, and huge storage area for unused bodies.

+1 to limited ships docked in Capships, that its owners can change and use at will. But someone must stock them there, then either leave as gunner to someone else or /log.

Sorry if I wasn't clear. I meant...

A: Cappies have limited room for ships.
and
B: Players are limited to ships they have currently in the ship.

I think cappies should only sell ships, that are in their cargo. It's weird if cappie can unlimited sell even ECs, because to sell unlimited, it needs to produce that item unlimited.
/cappie sellship "ship name" "price"
/cappie sellitem "item name" "price"
[item=weapon/addon/battery/beam/commodity]
/cappie listcargo
/cappie buy "item or ship name" "price"

Or, in addition to having a limited ship loadout, a cap ship could have an onboard "ship constructor." As in Homeworld, you would have to have resources preloaded on the ship to take advantage of it, or if you had a support mining fleet, could load resources mid-battle to support ship construction on the cap ship. This would ideally require every VO ship and item to have specified resource costs. It would also make defending your capship an extremely high priority, as you would hate to lose the ship loadout or the resources in the cargo/construction bay.

A capship with unlimited ECs, however, would be a pretty cool way of launching a bus war.

@CranstonGorky:

Onboard factory/shipyard would make sense for a LARGE ship, something over 3KM long... certainlly not a small light corvette as Trident. Note Homeworld's mothership is the largest, and produces frigates...

Despite fun, unlimited ECs is really not realistic. I prefer that player-owned capships to have limited resources, including the docking bay.

But on the other hand, special ships for events would be really fun, like one with unlimited free buses and govBlasters... and anyone doking to it could unload other weapons and setup a temporary home...

allowing us to move ships as cargo would be an interesting way to work with this, maybe allow them to be broken down into components. the components can be used onboard a capitol ship to either repair docked ships, or be used to re-assemble the ships. cappies could be then stocked with parts, which would open up the possibility of trying to steal the parts, which would be kinda cool.

Well It seems like the general consensus is to allow re-spawn only in previously loaded ships which I think would be a good way to limit things. If the cappie is destroyed all ships aboard would be lost and if the player runs out of ships then they would respawn at previous/normal home base.

"If the cappie is destroyed all ships aboard would be lost"

On death, drop 'em like the cargo they are (though if stored as full ships, maybe have a chance they are destroyed in the explosion, in which case they are dropped as scrap and/or parts instead). This gives an additional reward for destroying somebody's capship quickly - steal their fighters/bombers to resupply your own capship with. If you are too slow, they may not have any left to steal.
May 24, 2011 PaKettle link
If we had a way to steal them Id agree.....
May 25, 2011 Pizzasgood link
Oh. I was going on the basis of itemized ships that can be hauled into a capship to stock it. If the capship then explodes and drops those itemized ships, a moth could come along, scoop 'em up, and ferry them into a different capship where they could then be used (even if the devs don't allow us to use them from stations for whatever reason).

That works for stocking a capship with resources that it uses to construct ships as well - drop the resources, scoop them up, and load them into another capship.

Not being able to steal would only be a problem if the capship were either pre-stocked with ships and not refillable in the field (treat the ships like ammo that gets reloaded on docking during RR) or if the ships are reloaded via magic.

Great solution, Pizza.

The onboard robotic dock disassemble and store ships in crates, and unpack/assemble/refit one in seconds using robotic handlers!

Owner(s) fill it upon departing, and someone can play Military Logistics and dock a loaded XC to replenish it... as Connie could refit a few other capships in frontline... or a new military transport...

Perhaps it would make those crates of ships useful....
