take the mining beam, you already made it into a healing beam now..
make it into a tracktor beam. the first level will be :
starting energy 50
range 1000m
stops player thrusting, stops player from going AWAY from you, not coming back, or moving side to side. to exscape start thrusting again
2 level can be :
maintaining energy : 10
range 1500
drags player starting at 50m and speeding up back to the beam, the "Tracktored" player can move side-to side (to stop players dragging someone into flares)

tis' compleatly diffrent, dude. I didn't want to highjack his thread, or dig up an old one. that is one way, this is another.
I think we can safely discuss more than one way to do something in a thread.
Running?
If you want to slow a running ship down you treat the pursuing ship like a mini-roid, with a jump-stop effect of 300ms. This allows a better pilot (or faster ship) to get away, while a better pursuer can try to line up shots.

Even worse, wait till a pirate gets one and traders can't run away. Very very bad idea.
