New VO installers and torrents
There are now new VO installers on the torrents available from the website. So, if people like to help seed the torrents, please update to the new ones. Also, if anyone wants to test the new installers just to make sure they're cool, that'd be great as well. It's the current production version, so there's no patching.
The Linux version should now work properly on Ubuntu (bash/dash compatibility thing fixed).
The direct HTTP downloads are still serving the older installers for the moment, I'll swing those over before long.
Thanks all.

I am helping, downloading and seeding.
The torrent does not seem to have any seeds? I have been running it for a while now. 0 users.
Alright, now it's working.
Wooo /me fires up Transmission.
Transmission sucks.
I get rejected by the tracker.

Even Gnome-torrent fails.

Edit edit:
Okay, the torrent seems to work fine. Excellent, rather. First torrent I've had that actually hit my download speed limit :p
Unfortunately, it seems that the Updater contained in the new client file is broken for me from the get-go, and will not give me the same one-time run that the Updater from the old client gave. More importantly, it seems that it can't check for updates, which means VO will break at the next update when the version changes. I'll hang onto the old 1.7 client file and use that Updater for now.

Heh, an updated Updater won't update, while an Updater that needs to be updated will update.
Edit edit edit: In under 30 minutes, I've managed to fail at both reading instructions and linking. I think it's time to cut my losses and call it a day.

Yoda: You did download the new torrent files from the website, right? I don't know why you'd get rejected. We're running the 4.4.0 python bittorrent core tracker, the most compatible thing ever.
IRS: So it won't update? I just ran it on my XP machine last night, and it connected to the updater just great. This is on your '98 machine? It's not going to update the updater, since the included version of the updater is the latest. It should be.. exactly the same as what you would get (after updating) if you ran the older installer (still available via direct HTTP download).

It started working by itself, maybe just DNS and ISP caching stuff, I now have it an am seeding when not playing :)
Transmission is by and large the best BT client available for Mac OSX.
It works fine here (Updater and client), only there are no leechers.

IRS, So it's working fine now?
The updater in the installer is the exact same and hasn't changed at all.
Can you do a binary file comparison between the one that works and the one that doesn't?

So, if I completely ignore this thread, and don't do anything at all, will VO still update properly and let me play? Because I don't have any problems.
I am seeding the Mac version, have not tested the installer.
incarnate: No, it's not working fine, and yes, this is my Win98 machine. My failure was in reading that only the torrent had been changed- I had gone for the download mirror sites, earning me the "Fool of the Day" Award, before I re-read your post and passed my reading comprehension check.
In other matters...
I may have just found a fix that seems to work, but why this works is beyond me. The updater seems to come in two parts- Vendetta.exe, and update.rlb. By renaming update.rlb so Vendetta.exe can't find it, Vendetta.exe somehow magically remembers how to make a working internet connection. It creates and downloads a new update.rlb, checks the other VO files, and lets me play. As long as I rename/remove update.rlb, Vendetta.exe works every time. If I leave update.rlb, it fails every time.
Changing update.rlb to an executable and running that won't work- it produces the same old "can't connect" error as I described in the other thread. A filesize comparison between the two showed them to be the same size, so I popped open a bit comparer and found no difference. They're the exact same file. At least I can now do away with running directly from vendetta.rlb.
In summary: New workaround found- deletion of update.rlb prior to running Vendetta.exe results in a successful run.
