when i was young VO had 10 players! 15 when a good flag raid was going on!

and that seemed crowded too!

And we had to fly our ships 10 miles through the snow to get a piece of cargo!

You had SNOW!?!

The amount of times I have corrected your loose *lose is not funny UC, and you say thanks every time. It's just crazy, I could pull up some logs, but I won't. Cos my tipyng skucs.

On Topic

Yah, I seen this trend too, since alpha, in alpha I could predict when it would be safe to trade ;) in early beta whew, I learned to PVP with a roid (its still there!) then Shape joined with his roomie and stuff, and then we blew the hell out of stuff after he kicked my ass. I miss Alamar :/

Oh yah, I'm back! But without shaders for now!

I know Yoda. I suppose it's a telltale proof of my identity. Like "wich / which". There's absolutely no way I could pretend being someone else for any period of time without being discovered because of those. It's a wonder I lasted two weeks, incognito, as "upper case" before I was found out (mind you, wooping peeps in B8 as level 4 combat might not have been the best of cover).

Anyhow. I'm just waiting for this thread to come back around december 15th. Most people concur the slow down is as per the usual fluctuation.

And that actual paying members is on an upward curve. And as for me, just like Ghost, I'm just waiting for the right conditions to come back (actually, I've never really left, being on the boards every day and sometimes even on IRC...).

Yes folks, the numbers fluctuate. That will always be the case. I've been playing almost five years now. ( Yes, I checked my account info and it's true. Jeez time flies)
The game continues to get better, although not always as fast as we would like. All
I can suggest is "hold on a bit more, it continues to be worth it."

As a recent Eve convert (and gen-u-ine n00bie) I can say I was a teensy bit hesitant about the fluctuating numbers.

However, less players means more fun for everyone else, no? I couldn't stand the lag sometimes in Eve, and how there was no place where there wasn't somebody. If the numbers go back up, that's all well and good, but honestly, low numbers will hardly stop me from paying for this game (when there's money in my bank account anyway ^_^;).

Could be worse. Could be raining.

Personally, I left VO about 3 years ago, shorly before it was released to the public. One thing I didn't like was at the time, the universe had just been expanded to what it is now, and it was virtually barren. You could fly for hours or days and never stumble across another living soul in the dark.
The license system also damaged the rate of retention, since players now face a more uphill battle to advance in the game.

Just today, there were several brand new users on, and they were shocked and shaken that veterans would pay the monthly user fee to mine rocks and the like for the first week of play.

Personally, I think the current load is a good one, enough to keep the chat channels alive, and make it possible to stumble across an actual person occasionally, but is not so overcrowded as we got our fear before release of a bunch of players running around with strings of pointless numbers or LeTtErS to get a nickname they liked.

Generally, numbers fluctuate, always have and always will, it's part of how a pay-as-you-play game works. Some people retire, some never really get involved, and some are old wardogs that stay for years.

Generally, I'd say that the growth from the Alpha and Beta days when we had to fly the old 88 "Bus" on flag captures for kicks, has been remarkable. The days of massive combat in sector 6 with nuclear weapons, against the Devs with a1k0n flying the ONLY capital ship in the game are gone, but I think they've got a solid product to us and as always the Devs are hard at work making it better for the veterans and more fun for the new recruits.

Sector 9, man. What kind of crazy holds a giant battle in Gold nation's sector?

I've often been bothered by the enormity of the space we're in... There are so many systems which are just... useless... whose only function is as a timesink from one side of the universe to another.

And why do we WANT a timesink from one side of the universe to the other?

Besides the deneb run... that's the only reason I can think of...
Aug 27, 2007 yodaofborg link
The devs themselfs have said in the past (after it went gold too) that they agree the universe is too big, but I'm afraid I have to quote John "Its too late now, it would take way too much work to remove even one system", well maybe it takes too much work to make kourier what it is, so like, in my mind, space would look like this...

Aug 27, 2007 upper case link
Yeah. I was rather disappointed to see how much the universe was hard-coded back in the wh/connie thing.
Aug 27, 2007 incarnate link
A lot of our current development (kourier, hive, etc) is based on the idea of using the existing space, and in some cases, requires it. PCC missions also need to send players somewhere to do stuff, etc. We could instance every single mission, but then it would kind of cease to be an MMO and be more of a.. multiplayer game with an MMO meeting place. We're aiming for actual MMO content.

There's no question we made the universe too big at the beginning. It was a technical decision, based on how we would handle a very large influx of users. Since then, we've been working with what we have.

yoda, your model of the universe is upside-down. A common mistake.

I think Phaserlight's suggestion is a good one.

devwarp exists, so why not hardcode it into some devices spread about the galaxy.

If the universe is too big, it would be a very quick way of making it smaller.

Just make sure, no portals in grey,

and for roleplaying's sake, maybe have 4 portal locations in Nation space. One on either side of the capital system, and one at each edge of nation space.

3 in UIT space, one at each exit, so you can skip UIT space entirely. Itani space and serco space require a little bit of space in between

There's been plenty discussions as to how we could shorten the distances (black holes, fast scout ships etc) but that's really veering off the main discussion here.

RelayeR, BTW, I think you're wrong. It's my strong belief that BOTH the universe AND it's map are upside down.

I find all the different sectors refreshing, as a miner.
If there were so few sectors, there'd be less roidfields to trudge around in :)

uc: OH YEAH!... doh!

Well... I'm waiting for some more playable content as well, checking News and Forums now and then. You'll see me again iff the game becomes more interesting from a player's POV.

Hi,

I am a new player coming from Eve. One thing I'm noticing is that there is nothing to fight for in regards to prime territory.

It's more immersive I think if you can organize a campaign to fight for control of a resource rich area and drive an enemy out and claim the spoiles (better roids, better npc bots etc.).

Like I said, I'm new, so my first impression may be wrong.

I like the game though and think it has alot of potential and am trying to get my eve buddies to try it out.
Aug 31, 2007 Whistler link
You aren't wrong, mogray2.

The sort of thing you are suggesting is needed and is planned. From what I hear, this will happen pretty soon with stations requiring resources to make goods, but later there will be capturable stations.
